Generic
Assets
A
minimalist recollection of the days when we decided that cheap
stuff that came from no one knew where was good - and now,
as it turns out, funny.
Once
upon a time, in a Keynesian economy far, far away, some marketing
wizard took the concept of no-name brands and turned it into
an asset. Plain white packages with bold blue stripes and
deadheadedly simple typography: "Beer, "Milk",
and so on.
It's
out of date, but its added itself to our collective consumer
consciousness anyway.
The Generic
Assets shop takes this aesthetic and spins it out in t-shirt
designs that use that familiar typeface, usually against plain
white tshirts in a way that works, even if you can't remember
why.
That design conceit becomes a canvas
that can carry a wide variety of funny labels, slogans, and
ideas. It's really carried off very well, and these are some
smart, funny t-shirts.

Suitable for everyday home use
Most
of the tee shirts in the shop follow the generic model, but
there are some rogue individualistic designs, too.
There's a "Rat
Race" section that labels office workers ("Boss",
"Peon",
"Expendable")
but it branches out to sentiments like "Fire
me... please" and, for those who actually wore
these shirts to work, "Unemployed".
There are
political labels for just about anyone - one of the few
colored shirts in the shop is, understandably, "Green
Party".
For generic
family life there are useful labels ("Mom",
"Dad",
"Mean
Uncle") and a whole section of infant creepers
and bibs - not to mention labeled tee shirts for a whole
wedding
party.
And there's a whole section for Girl
Stuff because "they're special".
But wait - there's more!
Don't miss the "Higher
Learning" section ("Dropout")
or "Sports".
Even though it breaks the overall trend
here, I really like the "Fake
Spring Break" t-shirts, like the pictured "Spring
Break 2005 - Sumeria", "Carthage"
or "Haiti".
The Generic
Assets shop takes a pretty simple but effective idea and
uses it with style and humor. Have a look!
