The
Curmudgeony Librarian
You take them for granted; you
think they're wallflowers. But one day they tell you "Don't
Make Me Shush Your Ass", and the world changes.
I've
always liked librarians. When I was a kid, I worked in the
school library; my aunt was a librarian, and my mother used
to ask what the librarian and I were getting up to out there
in the stacks. So when I had a life-changing experience during
Rachel Weisz' "I am a librarian!" speech, in The
Mummy, it wasn't news to anyone. I still don't know why
she doesn't return my calls.
But I digress.
Librarians have one of the Really Neatest
Jobs in the world.
The Curmudgeony
Librarian Superstore is owned by, run by, and painstakingly
sorted by, a
librarian. The core of the designs on these tshirts, coffee
mugs, stickers, tote bags, gewgaws and gimcracks are based
on a lifetime spent in Library Science. They're obviously
meant for librarians to wear, but there's nothing to stop
anyone else, of course - and there are other sections in the
store for general circulation funny tshirts and other goods.

Librarian Gear
The
library-centric sections of this site offer "Librarian
Gear", "Sexy
Librarian Finery" and, one stack over, "Librarians
for Good", a section whose profits all go to a variety
of charities. There's a childrens section, too, in "Librarian
Baby Gear", for folks in the lower ranges of the
decimal system.
Filed separately are buttons,
magnets, stickers and license
plate holders.
Several of these are crisp text designs,
nicely done, with slogans like "Hmmm...
My Librarian Senses are Tingling" or "Information
Mafia", not to be outdone by "Information
Hottie". There go those Rachel Weisz flashbacks again.
There are some more colorful or graphic
designs like "Queen
of the Library", and the odd hybrid of an umlaut-heavy
"Metal
Librarian" t shirt. Look for Metallica under "M",
but don't play it or your ass will be so shushed.

Politics, Employment, and Wenchery

The
Curmudeon, though, is nothing if not eclectic.
Also in the (card) catalogue are stacks
of political, employment, and just plain humorous designs.
There's a Wenchery
section for labelling wenches of all descriptions, from "Anime
Wench" to "Info
Wench". You have no idea how badly I wanted a Z
just then.
And there's even an opportunity to wander
over to the computer room for "Blogger
Gear", which may explain what those particular patrons
are doing hunched over the library's screens for hours on
end. I was wondering, but too polite to snoop.

What's not to like?

Budget
cuts! Book banning! Adminstrators!
Not a thing, really, other than those.
This is a nicely laid out niche site with some amusing and
attractive designs on a variety of apparel and other items.
Being a niche, it won't have something for everyone - though
it is surprisingly general, in some areas - but that's exactly
where its charm lies. Have a look!
